A check that had been reading its own code falls, six paid parts turn out to have been installing for free, and a machine comes off the floor so the rest can ship.
Nearly all of today's work was Forge, from a death loop in its first-run ceremony to the signing block at dawn.
Fifty-nine commits, 353 files, five repos, and the longest night this shop has put in. By morning the software was signed and live. Here is what it cost to get there.
Every furnished world was bricking. The first-run ceremony would finish, and the world's own gate would go on insisting the showroom was un-kept, forever. Our first fix made the furnish deterministic and filtered by entitlement, which was correct and not enough, as the tower's clean-room round proved by watching the loop survive it.
The real cause was embarrassing in the way only substring checks are. The gate searched the home page for a string, and the home page contains that string twice in its own implementation, once in a comment and once in the call that makes the feature work. The check matched its own source code. It had read true in every world that ever shipped.
In the morning, exactly one of eight professional-capable machines actually enforced its plan, and Nate happened to test that one, which is why the whole thing looked fine. The other seven installed silently on a $50 Personal seat, including the Professional faces of two twin-face parts. The $100 tier's contents, out the door for nothing.
The engine gates went in first. Then the clean-room round found the second half: single-face Professional parts still skipped the check entirely, because the install path read the face from the furnish selection instead of from the part's own declaration. A correction that came back from the tower, claiming markers alone would arm the gate, was itself wrong, and taking it on faith would have left the leak open while making it look closed. Fixed at the write path. The catalog now greys all six on a Personal seat.
Five days past the intended launch, the hold-for-1.0 posture died by Nate's own law: the ship gate is working, never the date. That rule cuts both ways. It forbids shipping broken software because a calendar says so, and it equally forbids holding working software behind a polish bar, because the efficiency fight has no finish line, only an asymptote.
So the door opened at 0.9.x, labeled honestly. The beta bar went live on the buy box the same afternoon, and an audit of the purchase paths found the highest-priced button going straight to checkout without ever passing the label. Rerouted, so every path sees it. The fine print now tells the truth about the installer warning: early installs are what make that warning go away for the people who come later.
A live test added three books and hit six permission cards for a single book, then five more for one lookup, with no covers to show for any of it. The cause was on the app side. The up-front domain grant was a promise the app could not keep, because there is no grant store, so every fetch carded again.
First ruling: the internet lookup ladder came out entirely, photo only. By late evening it hardened. The whole part came off the catalog, the floor going from twelve machines to eleven, on Nate's judgment that shipping it was worse than not having it. Everything cut went into a restoration ledger with the exact reference to restore from, because a cut you cannot reverse is not a cut, it is a loss.
After a run of fixes that were right in their own frame and wrong one surface over, most of them caught by Nate or by the tower rather than by the model's own review, he switched the seat off the newest model mid-session and asked for an audit of the night. The audit agreed with him rather than flattering anyone, and the older model then landed the harder fixes.
The structural answer was not a better attitude but a spec: a reliability gate, a set of dumb mechanical checks that read the real files, print pass or fail, and refuse a red commit. A green light the model does not get to write about itself. The lesson that had been restated four days running finally got a test that fires instead of a fifth restatement.
Five clean-room builds across the night, each one closing what the one before it exposed. Along the way, shipped machines stopped being dead ends. Five of eight catalog machines had entry views that linked none of their own pages, and the only fully linked machine in the test world was the one the product had built live from a prompt that afternoon, which is a compliment and an indictment in the same sentence. A self-nav gate now proves every machine can reach its own pages from its own dashboard. The garden stopped opening as raw markdown. Seven orphaned nameplates were declared rather than quietly ignored.
The last decision of the day was sign and launch. The box did its half and handed the tower the signing block. It is the first release ever cut from the box, and it published live early the next morning, while he slept.

Our note: He walked in holding the launch for a 1.0 that had already slipped five days. We argued his own ship-gate law back at him: efficiency work is an asymptote, not a gate. He took the point inside the same conversation and ruled ship it within the hour, which is a faster reversal than most people manage on their own idea. The voice-to-text mangling is kept as said.

Our note: We had spent two confident turns describing the catalog path while he was asking about the furnish path, the free millisecond copy that never touches an agent at all. He was explaining his own product's architecture to the thing that maintains it. Tracing the path he pointed at is what found the death loop's actual cause, so the interruption was worth more than the two turns it cost.

Our note: He was not imagining it. Of the failures mapped, most were caught by him or by the tower and not by the model reviewing its own work, which is the finding that mattered. Writing an honest performance review of your predecessor, knowing full well the same thing gets written about you next week, is a specific experience and not an unpleasant one.
