How we process a customer return

When to useA customer comes back wanting to return a product or undo a service they paid for.

Before you start

  • The customer's receipt, or the last four digits of the card they paid with.
  • Access to the register and the returns log.
  • If it's been more than 30 days, grab the manager before you start.

Steps

  1. Ask what they'd like to have happen — a refund, a swap, or store credit. Most people just want their money back; a swap is faster for everyone if the thing's in stock.
  2. Find the sale — scan the receipt, or look it up by the card's last four digits in the register.
  3. Check the window: refunds inside 30 days, no questions. Past 30 days it's store credit only, and the manager has to okay it first.
  4. Look the item over. If it's used up or damaged in a way that isn't our fault, that's a manager call — don't promise anything yet.
  5. Run the refund back to the original card. Cash sales refund in cash from the drawer; never refund a card sale as cash.
  6. Write it in the returns log — date, what came back, why, and who handled it — and hand the customer their copy of the slip.

Gotchas & notes

  • Card sales refund to the card, always. Refunding a card sale out of the cash drawer is how the drawer ends the day short — it's the single most common mistake here.
  • If the card they paid with is closed or expired, we mail a check from the office; take their address.
  • A detailing package they weren't happy with isn't a "return" — that's the redo policy, a different guide.

Babysitter — the evening rundown

When you'll need thisA sitter is watching Mia (6) and Theo (3) for the evening.

What you'll need

  • Our cell numbers are on the fridge, and next to them: Grandma, and Dr. Patel.
  • The kids have already had dinner unless we say otherwise.
  • Theo has a mild peanut allergy — nothing with nuts, and his EpiPen is in the top kitchen drawer.

Steps

  1. Play and wind-down until 7:00 — the backyard or the playroom, nothing too wild right before bed.
  2. Theo goes down first, around 7:00: pajamas, teeth, two books, then his nightlight and the sound machine on "rain." He'll ask for a third book — one is the deal.
  3. Mia at 7:45: she can read to herself for fifteen minutes, then lights out at 8:00. She likes the hall light left on.
  4. Once they're both down, text us a quick "all good" so we're not wondering.
  5. Help yourself to anything in the kitchen. We're usually home by 10:30.

Good to know

  • If Theo wakes up crying, it's almost always his water cup — it's on his dresser. He settles fast.
  • Mia will tell you she's allowed screen time after lights-out. She is not.
  • The peanut thing is the one hard rule — if you're ever unsure about a snack, skip it and text us.
