📄 references/cabinet-folders.md

On a real Forge this is a plain text file sitting in a folder you own. This page just shows what's inside it.

The cabinet folders — where things get filed

The filing cabinet is ../cabinet/ (a sibling of this machine). Every filed document lands in exactly one of

these seven folders. This is the whole taxonomy — a plain set that fits a small business or a household. If a

document doesn't obviously fit one, the plan flags it [confirm] for you rather than guessing.

FolderWhat belongs hereTypical documents
Financial/Periodic account statements from banks, card issuers, and lendersBank statements, credit-card statements, loan statements, account summaries
Invoices/Bills, invoices, receipts, and payment records for goods and servicesVendor invoices, utility bills, service bills, receipts, payment confirmations
Tax/Anything tax — returns, forms, schedules, and accountant correspondence1099s, W-2s, tax returns, sales-tax filings, CPA engagement/cover letters
Contracts/Signed agreements and the documents that govern a relationshipLeases, supply agreements, service contracts, NDAs, warranties, terms of service
Insurance/Insurance policies and everything around themPolicies, declarations pages, certificates of insurance (COIs), renewal notices, claims
Correspondence/Letters and emails that aren't a bill, a statement, or a governing documentGeneral letters, emails, notices, memos
Admin/Licenses, registrations, permits, and the paperwork that lets the business or household operateBusiness licenses, permits, LLC/annual-report filings, vehicle titles, IDs, certificates

How the classify step chooses

  1. **Read what the document is, not what it's named** — the drawer's filenames are noise (scan0091,

untitled (3), final, IMG_2201). The folder comes from the content.

  1. One primary home. A document that could touch two folders goes to its primary nature: a warranty that

reads like a signed agreement is Contracts/; a warranty that's really an equipment registration is Admin/.

A utility bill is Invoices/; a utility rate-change letter is Correspondence/.

  1. When it genuinely doesn't fit, the plan marks the folder [confirm] and proposes the closest match —

you decide. Never invent an eighth folder without you asking for one.

*Editable: add, rename, or re-scope folders here and the machine follows — but keep the cabinet folders on disk

(../cabinet/) in sync with this list. A household might rename Admin/ to Home-and-ID/; a contractor might

split Invoices/ into Bills-Paid/ and Invoices-Sent/. Just say so, or edit here.*
